A urine culture is a diagnostic test performed to identify the presence of bacteria or other microorganisms in a urine sample. This test is commonly used to diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs) and guide the selection of appropriate antibiotics for treatment.
During a urine culture, a clean-catch or midstream urine sample is collected to minimize contamination from the surrounding genital area. The sample is then streaked onto a culture plate or added to a culture medium that supports the growth of bacteria. The culture is incubated for a specified period, allowing any present bacteria to multiply and form colonies.
